Jolla: Weekly News Roundup
There have been a number of articles/videos relating to Jolla published over the past week which I’d like to draw your attention to.
The first being a recent CNBC Squawk Real Time interview with CEO Tomi Pienimaki talking about Jolla and the Sailfish OS posted by @JollaSuomi.
In the short interview, Tomi answers questions from the CNBC panel and you can see it for yourself here: http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000209697
Next up we have a really nice new hands on video by mobil.idnez.cz (tipped by one of our commenters Torcida), who show off some elements of Sailfish we haven’t seen before.
The demonstration/hands on shows off the browser in action and a good working glimpse of the onscreen keyboard which we’ve also been eager to see in operation.
For more, go and have a look at the video here: http://mobil.idnes.cz/jolla-sailfish-os-0z3-/telefony.aspx?c=A131016_124448_telefony_vok
Our friends Jolla Suomi have been very busy as usual and have had the chance to do an interview with Marc Dillon!
The interview is conducted in English and provides a nice background on the former CEO.
For the full interview transcript, you can read it here: http://jollasuomi.fi/jollasuomen-haastattelussa-jollan-head-of-software-development-marc-dillon/
Finally, we also hear straight from the horses mouth that it is already snowing in Finland (wasn’t it summer only the other day!?)
While the snow may continue to fall in Finland, I don’t mind what colour Christmas we have as long as it’s a “Jolly” one (if there’s a choice, I wouldn’t mind black, grey, white, dark blue… heck I’ll take just about any with the exception of pink!).
Thanks and Sail On…
Man, any color! Just can’t wait anymore for that beast. I know we’re gonna have all of the colors, but there’s no favorite to choose you know? Maybe A “most” fav would be applicable 😉
Gosh I want my phone already!
Nice job on the round up, both JT and JS 🙂 loving the community more every day.
BTW, it snowed in Sweden yesterday as well. And yes, it was just a few days ago when we smelled autumn! Now it snows 😀
I would actually die for getting the whole package with all the colours. You match your phone to the colour of clothes. The coolness is just out of this planet!!!!
That’s quite a surprising hands on exclusive with idnes.cz
It’s a bit odd we’ve not seen other sites with similar hands on demos yet. I do hope idnes.cz haven’t stepped on an embargo. I’d have hoped a wider viewed site might have done a first hands-on, like The Verge (no offence intended to idnes.cz).
Yes, that wasn’t exactly a smooth and speedy browser on show there. I would have thought with Opera being part of the Sailfish Alliance the Jolla browser would set a new performance standards, beyond BB10, for mobile browsers.
This is where it matters for me. Swipey transitions get boring and insignificant after the first hour but the core component applications will make or break Sailfish
Damn, looks like browser sucks monkey balls and it’s most important to me. Probably not final build though…

It looks that in the browser, text does not wrap automatically to fill the displayed area of the page. And unlike most browsers of N9, column width does not zoom to automatically match with the screen width, when you double tap on text. Those features are a must for fluent browsing.
… on the other hand, the demo of mobil.idenes.cz was not thorough to show whether the browser has those features or not. Let’s hope it gets properly equipped for online text editing, for example.
I think two things to bear in mind are:
1/ It’s a prototype still which is also probably why none of the other tech sites have had a chance to review it yet (to answer Shaun).
2/ I maybe wrong but it looks to me like he’s on 3G only as I looked and couldn’t see the WIFI signal icon. That would explain the slightly slow page rendering.
Really hope that browser is in pre-alpha stage. My Lumia 720(1ghz dual core,512mb ram) with 3G renders that site WAY faster and smoother…
Yeah, it should do better… I mean look at the N9 (with it’s 1GHz CPU) – the browser is still great.
P.S. !!
Apparently it is not the latest firmware in this hands-on!! Just compare the icons with the new ones shown here: http://www.jollausers.com/2013/10/jolla-wants-to-be-the-google-of-smartphones-not-nokia/
😉 🙂
how about this video is a hoax?
– the camera is placed in the centre (back side view after a few seconds) whereas on any other pic available so far it is well to the right (seen from behind)
– browser seems to suck, as if it was a Chinese counterfeit (running on Android w/ 256 or 512MB at most)
– no offence but where on earth does a shitty little site get a Jolla device from?!?
buttons are on the wrong side
fromt camera lens is towards the left edge (from the front) whereas on pics on the Jolla site it is closers to the “ear set”
@Claude – you must have missed the small design changes from a few months ago (Jolla website image renders still haven’t been updated to show changes): http://jollatides.com/2013/08/21/jolla-slight-changes-to-hardware/
Remember the demo is using a prototype and it looks to me like the browser is running on 3G only. Just have another look at the video and you will struggle to find a WiFi icon. 😉
Thx for mentioning me…
Cheers!! 🙂
Marc Dillon will be one of the speakers 😉
Sorry, couldn’t find where to submit stories so I’ll do it here as it’s kind of on topic.
Jolla was awarded the Millenium prize.

” Things I really like about the Nokia N9: – The alarm works even if the phone is turned off
A lot of people like to shutdown their phones at night. Unfortunately, with iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices you can’t turn them off at night if you want to wake up in the next morning, otherwise those devices alarm will not work. The Nokia N9 alarm will work every time, even if you turn off the phone, it will power on in the morning and ring the alarm bell, which is a great feature that previous Nokia phones with Symbian and even Blackberry devices always had.
You can also connect the phone to the power outlet and charge it while turned off. Most competitors can only do this while running the OS, so when you connect the phone to the wall the phone will boot the OS and start charging the battery. The N9 will charge without needing to boot the Harmattan OS. ”
Is it possible to have this feature on the new Sailfish OS ?
what is it with the pulley menu in this video… it shouldn’t work that way…
I’ve asked me the same… After pulling it is fixed on the top – why!?
But anyways… Like I also said this is not the latest version of Sailfish, just compare the icons 😉
Here you’ll see the new ones: http://www.jollausers.com/2013/10/jolla-wants-to-be-the-google-of-smartphones-not-nokia/
(Just scroll down a bit)
No more pre-orders!
Whatever you do to the Other Half but always please include a small extra battery in it. It’ll help a lot. 🙂
sub.
We’re supposed to be using this phone in 10 weeks time. And so far we’re debating about a box of coloured plastic and whether a substandard browsing experience is ‘genuine’. Things are not exactly looking good. I’m disappointed about the level of information to those of us who joined (paid/invested 100€) the tribe. What is the other half we hear so much yet so little about? And I don’t mean the blue sky thinking about what it might become but what – exactly – will ‘we’ get?
Seems a pity to say this but my 5S is simply just so good (especially the connectivity with Pages & Keynote) that I’m considering not even going ahead with the jolla.
I understand just how exciting jolla/sailfish must be for Nokia n9 devotees – although I’m not one of them I can appreciate the ‘rebirth of a favourite’. But I’m beginning to question what, if anything, it has for the rest of us.
Anyone with anything definite and specific to persuade me?!
Not sure why you’re under the assumption you should be getting heaps of info, already there’s been far more info provided than one ever got “before” the 1st android or ios devices came to market. The 100eud pre-order was never guarantee of blow-by-blow progress, it was a guarantee of a place in the queue, a 100eud down-payment, & a purchase of a “other-half”.
I suppose this is because of the marketing strategy adopted by Jolla. Terminology such as ‘movement’ and ‘tribe’ suggest ‘membership’ rather than simply joining a queue (as I readily accept I have done whilst I wait for my Blackmagic pocket camera). There is also the notion that this is different from what already exists – although I entirely accept that this is merely my perception not a definitive statement from Jolla. I also accept that simply by buying into a pre-order I can’t expect too much – it’s hardly corporate investment! But a clue as to what the OH is or a hint at ETA would be reassuring…
Yes, the language at times has been cumbersome, the genuine intention is there, but it’s served to be more of a “rock around their neck” than a positive thing at times. We already have a good idea about some of the critical puzzle pieces surrounding the OH, more needs to come so that there can be real bottom-up/organic growth “ala Rasp_Pi”, & it needs to be very soon. Details about the 1st “actual” OH don’t need to be shared yet, they need to keep that for the actual launch day…
Also, if latest spec. is to be believed, a formal launch “may” be imminent, earlier than I was expecting

Read from pages 151-153, tis still all purely speculation….
