Chief Designer: Confirms Final Bezel Will Be Smaller
While I was talking to Chief Designer, Martin @ #JollaLoveDay I did pick up on the fact that the prototype bezel seemed slightly larger than necessary (IMO) and Martin mentioned that it was a prototype and would be altered for final production.
So with that said, I requested that he allowed us to get this information on video to which he was happy to accommodate us.
He did misunderstand my initial question (maybe my fault for not being completely clear) which was referring specifically to changing the ‘bezel’ and not the overall design of the device which I already realised is fairly fixed at this stage.
Nevertheless, in the video below he does confirm what so many of you have been asking and that is the final screen will feature a ‘smaller dead bend’ so at least this will hopefully help lay the subject of the ‘bezel’ to rest.
He also confirms further optimisations for the final production model:
EDIT: I just noticed from another image, that the bezel was significantly smaller than that of the prototype in the videos we’ve been seeing – take a look and see what you think, but it seems much nicer to me and I personally hope this is the final look:
Sail On…
Yes yes yes….., sail on!!!! 🙂
*Like*
It’s great news and also if you look at the product images on the jolla.com website, you can see in the renditions, to my eyes at least, the bezel is in fact smaller than the prototype bezel from the videos. 😉
i cannot find the image in jolla website, give me a link?
Lisää hopea alumiinisomisteita (luo lisää premium ilmettä)!.
Here’s a more accurate one: Add silver aluminium embellishments (creates more premium expression)!
To me the bezel looks rather large in that another image as well.
@Henkka: Translated as ‘Add Silver With aluminum (create more premium look)!.’
You may know already that the main frame around the screen will be anodised metal so a silver anodised finish can also be easily possible but I personally like the black anodised look. 😉
To be more precise: “Add silver-aluminium decorations (creates more of a premium look)!”
So the request was for more decorations, some of which are already there (like the Jolla text).
Sweet!
bezel is nice for me!
Oh,my god, THANKS THE DESIGNER. iF SMALLER BEZEL, i WILL SURELY BUY THE PHONE
Yes! Me too, Actually I think Sailfish OS looks perfect with bezel-less design.
I think we can expect many more these kinds of news while waiting for the final Jolla-device to become available. I gues, the prototype “announcement” few days ago left on purpose some questions unanswered, for example, the #IAMTheOtherHalf concept and its actual technical implementaion. Jolla is still a relatively small company and thats way some of the product details can not be revealed before the phone can start to be shipped to end customers. This is how I see some of the “rough ends” and unknowns that still exist in relation to Sailfish operating system, apps and device hardware specs. It will be good, and “unlike” (not an ecosystem, but community driven alternative).
Good point Jukka and I know we discussed in the Q&A the idea that Jolla could try to provide regular updates in the coming months and they seemed open to this idea. 🙂
It would be ideal if they can show a killer feature once a month until release. This way they can create a lot of buzz and hype.
Definitely! 🙂
The phone have notification LED?
I don’t know for sure, but if it has, it hasn’t been shown to date.
i twittered jollahq a few day ago to asked them “is it too late to made the bezel at the top and bottom smaller?” they answered me with ” no too late”
i feel that the jolla logo is not that professional and elegant, if only they can change that as well!
I know what you mean about the logo it kind of looks like a signature, but in reality it looks really nice and classy and I suppose is Jolla’s ‘signature’ device. I personally really like the Jolla logo in our header at the top (the one on the boat).
I want the jolla logo on front face of the phone, ’cause only cheap phones don’t place it on front face.. Does jolla thinks themselves as not a premium manufacturer? So why they are not putting that beautiful logo on front face preferably on bottom of screen this way they can utilise the waste space also.. Even Samsung, SONY logos which aren’t too attractive, still they put them on front. (sony being with too large fonts, Sony Ericsson logo was way better & green energy ball was awesome).. By using aluminium front half jolla showed the device is premium, so please just add a logo on front.
looks nice to me…
is it still 4.5″ screen size?
I think I recall Martin saying that the prototype screen was slightly under 4.5′ which would make sense then that the final finished Jolla will make up the extra screen estate by losing some of the bezel.
Just found where he says ‘this is 4.5′ even a little bit smaller’ at around 5:10 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpIfzFLmEM8&feature=player_embedded
Because it has no buttons the screen should be just that the SCREEN, so the bezel shoul be 5mm up and down ,and 2-3mm from the sides. If it has curved glass i’l pay any price for it.
@ Aleksandar: 5mm might be okay but remember if the bezel is too small, it can become difficult to operate and hold especially given the fact Sailfish is designed to be swiped from the edges.
That’s why a curved glass is needed as N9: gorilla 2 FHD of course and I hope a 2 MB pixels front camera. Jolla can sell each “other half” from €20 to €200 dependent what’s inside: nude cover, qwerty, speakers, battery, zoom, game pad, payment features…
Talk about screen sizes absolutely needs to switch from inches to millimeters, at least when mobnile devices are the subject. Inches are a rather flexible measure, if they way Nokia are handling it is any indication. Both the N900 and the C7 were supposedly sold with an 3,5″ display, with the C7’s one, being of the same height, is significantly less wide than the N900’s display. I think most OEMs handle it that way, the measures getting rounded up
Yeah it’s funny how inches are the standard when you’re right the real measurement is more accurate in mm. Still inches are quite easy to visualise for something this size and that might explain why Martin said the screen was just under 4.5′ because it is actually just rounded up from metric.
Metric is not more accurate. In machining it’s all about thousandths of an inch and tenths. Any metric can be converted and anyways metric sucks. I will never use metric on my desktop cnc at home, ever.
Well in UK and most of Europe and the rest of the world metric is used as standard with CNC machines and components now. In UK it used to be imperial (inches) and in the USA it is still imperial AFAIK.
Really it’s what you are used to but having used both imperial and metric I find metric far easier than fiddling about with 1/16 of an inch etc.
I was saying for visualising something like a screen size, imperial works quite well though, but if I had to take out calipers to measure the dimensions of the screen, that would be read in mm. 😛
I’m an industrial engineer from the UK and I’m old enough to have gone through school and college being taught both systems and believe me metric is much much better and makes far more sense
Definitely agree with that!
We in Oz changed to metric in 1966. I was bought up on Imperial system as a kid but went into Engineering and it was SO much easier to get a handle on the metric system. Dealing in microns is neat and simple – thousands of an inch went with the dinosaurs. The 4.5″ screen should be known as the 114, or a 4.3″ as a 110.
Metric sucks, no way.
So, after reducing bezel, the only thing that they could make better (in design ofc) is the split on sides which makes the effect of two stacked devices. I know, it’s because of the other half, but it could be smaller.
And, I’d like a bit smaller model.
Wow, this is what obstructing my purchase of jolla device, now i am in. 🙂
well i would expect an overall N9 size body with 4.5inch display like lumia 920 with thinnest bezel all over…Preordered!!
notification light, please! I am fascinated of it in my n900, too. It’s simple but programmable 😉
I love jolla, the community and the freedom.
Tank you for all this!

Rootable ?
Battery Size – put a decent size battery in there please !
API’s (in particular am interested in accessing the incoming calls and texts before the phone acts on them.
LED notification +1
API – The SDK and docs are at https://sailfishos.org though you might need lower level access than the Sailfish level.
LED notification -1 for me. With so many different notifications (SMS, email, missed calls, twitter, facebook…) mine would be permanently on. I’d love to see a low-power screen like the N9 though which makes glancing at the time, notifications or whatever else is on the LPS a breeze.
Notification LED would be a nice feature! Not mandatory, if there are permanent notofications on a sleep/standby screen. Still, the LED would be a nice addition. Should be a bright flashing LED at the top (where the headset jack is), to be visible e.g. if inside your shirt pocket. Programmable, also as charging control.
I would be very disappointed, if there is no LED and no sleep screen! We have not seen either, yet.
Self advertise – make the name Jolla prominent on the front. In social settings, a phone is usually face up when on a table, so put your stylized JOLLA along the bottom bezel to illuminate (pulse) with incoming calls and notifications. It’s telling everyone present – look at me, look at me, I’m a JOLLA phone. I agree – a small as possible bezel all round – similar ratio to n9 – mine is easy to swype.
Most of the users including those who pre-ordered the device are from EU, But Jolla is an International Corp. , so as an Iranian who deadly waiting for Jolla , Some questions arise.
1- How long it would take Jolla to support Middle-East languages ?
2- How Jolla can handle OTA updates for users lets say people in Iran?
3-Think I’ve bought the device, It’s pretty normal for a company to provide warranty and services for it’s customers. Since I’m not living in the EU, warranty in my region remains one of the biggest concerns. You know, I don’t want to be afraid of dropping the device accidentally and have nowhere to repair my device, Normal issue, isn’t it?
4- I want Jolla to assure us- the jolla lovers- about the Quality and the Durability of the Mobile. What would happen to the other half ( that colorful sticker! ) after normal usage in an extreme Hot/Cold weather ? ( my region is damn hot ) . what if some Dusts sit in between? Will the other half attach to the body as tight as the first day after using it for about 2 years? or changing numerous other-halfs repeatedly? ( as you know, N9’s cover loses it’s shape after 2 years or taking it on and off )
These are my major concerns and these problems are vital for a device.
Sorry, I’m not pessimist I just want Jolla to be seamless 🙂
although the device is SO EXPENSIVE for people in Iran due to sanctions….. But I’ll buy Jolla in the name of MeeGo and Jolla’s talented staffs.
regards.

Will it have dedicate camera button? That and the notification led will make a very nice phone.
Bring it on guys, it looks very good, hope it’s available here in Australia. I can’t wait to be able to upgrade my N9!!!
