Sailfish: The App Story To Date
Sorry for my lapse this last week but I have had the usual winter bug kick in unfortunately. π¦
There are a few things to catch up on, and the first is some more exciting leaked information on the proposed app store for Sailfish.
While it was confirmed a while ago the google play store will not feature, Jolla has confirmed that their own app store on the handset will feature android apps (as well as native apps) and there of course will be a way to get apps from 3rd party sites or repositories as well.
One of the 3rd party sites which has been spotted by @Jolla ArgentinaΒ as an icon on the Jolla handset is F-Droid, which is a place where you can download FOSS android apps until your hearts content.
If you would like to know more, go and check out the apps already available at F-Droid, by clicking on this link:Β https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdstyle=grid
So Jolla’s app story is starting to form an almost complete picture now and we can clearly see that there are going to be a few options available for getting the apps we love. Β Speaking of which, it’s great to see some priority apps we mentioned in a previous post have already made their way on the Jolla handset (eBay, Instagram, Angry Birds, Whatsapp, Maps, Spotify, Youtube, Finger Term etc) – just look closely at the image above. Β π
It will be really great when we start to see more native Sailfish apps coming to the store like the ones our friend SailDev has been working on. π

Wow ! That’s fantastic π no worries at all ! Good job Jolla. But I’ve one objection. Why it is neglecting the Indian market? It is very very strong and many Indian guys, like me, would love to see the Jolla in India ! If a partner is needed then it can be Micromax ! Very good company indeed. Please Jolla. Provide us the Sailfish OS and mobiles with the Other Halves as soon as possible. I’m one of the biggest fan and I’m 100% ready to buy one smartphone as soon as it arrives here π Another thing. Can’t there be an app like facebook or twitter to be in touch with other sailfish users from anywhere the world anytime? Where we can create groups and also a FAQ Centre and OS Community, e.g. JollaUsers, JollaTide etc, for better discussion right through the app? It will be very very unique app though. No need to open the internet everytime to keep contact with community. Please provide an app like this as soon as possible. Thanks and all the best Jolla for your all hard work π
I for one would be driven away from Jolla if it used Facebook for communication / community groups. Facebook is the anithesis of openness and security.
I would be happy if a forum was hosted using SMF board software (http://www.simplemachines.org)
My suggesstion is to use a versatile and stable bulletin-board application for the announcements and discussion about the Store and its applications . A good reference is talk.maemo.org, which uses the vBulletin system. vBulletin is not free, but its purchase and maintenance costs are not high. Perhaps almost all the customized features can be copied from talk.maemo.org etc.
Oops, there already is this F-droid Forum: https://f-droid.org/forums/
Sorry, I don’t yet have a clear idea of whether the Sailfish Store is going to be a parallel Store, or whether F-droid or Sailfish Store will be a parent to the other app store.
Please develop an app like that cause it’ll help lots and lots of people forever. It should be in the priority list. π
But how are any of these apps going to be vetted so they aren’t malicious or duplicate apps? I think the play store checks this but not sure about other stores.

mielenkiintoista – interesting, I support the idea
Will the store have a branch (tags, menus etc) for non-free applications, with full payment features?
(A) For the Android applications of the F-droid?
(B) For Sailfish applications?
Or, is the business going to be based on donations only?
I found answers to some questions of mine by reading the news of https://lists.sailfishos.org/pipermail/devel/2013-November/000989.html
– Jolla Harbour will work as a portal for submitting applications to the Jolla Store
– At launch, the Jolla Harbour and Jolla Store will support only free applications
– At Jolla they are working hard to enable payment solutions
Now I understand thatn F-Droid is going to be only a third-party site.
It’s a missed opportunity that there isn’t tighter collab. with f-droid, rather than re-uploading most of the same Android apps in the Jolla Store.* Even more of a fail, is the fact that they won’t have a system for commercial apps in place by launch time, big fat fail.
*but I can see, pros/cons for both approaches
