Have You Pre-Ordered? Vote To Be Heard!
To help Jolla with the pre-order, one of our readers (Yoyo) suggested we try and find out if there are any reasons holding people back at this early stage from placing a pre-order and joining the Jolla tribe.
We are assuming that a lot of you who already read this blog have an interest in Jolla and Sailfish and thus in the forthcoming handset and so would be the best group to raise the question and find some answers.
Also, the fact that there is a 0 Euro option in the pre-order should mean there are no imminent financial excuses for at least registering your interest if you like what you see.
So without further ado, here is a poll to try and help Jolla improve the pre-order success rate and get to the bottom of what might be holding any of you back or if indeed there is anything at all:
NB: If your answer is one of the ‘No’ options, please tell us your specific reasons in the comments below so we can give this feedback to Jolla.
Would like to know more about the (possible) ”other halfes” (hardwaresides) and their functionalitys
Thanks for the feedback dr_flyguy – nice concise point.
Can i pre-order if i live in the US?
I would like to pre-order but the Limited Edition + Other half option is not available for Hungary 😦
I’m from India, and we are expecting Jolla mobile by 2014 only. Till then we can find more new models and improvements OS, back camera with shutter and lot more.
I’ve finally decidet to trust Jolla that they will at the end make my dream phone, so I’ll be able to replace my good old N900. Too bad there’s no €100 option available for my country, so I opted for €40 preorder, because I wanted to support Jolla to make it happen. I’m taking it as some sort of investment, hoping it will develop at least near of my wishes.
Where is the hardware keyboard? Will Jolla produce and sell a model with one?
There are no excuses to not order, if interested on the given spec and price range. The 0eur ‘package’ means ONLY that the device is interesting.
Whay is more valuable from Jolla’s poiny of view is to have estimate that critical mass is achivable. This information can beused in two ways:
1) production order planning. Im not expert in mobile device manufacturing, still to get reasonable prices one has to be able to
a) estimate demand and fit component orders accordingly
b) ensure that the desired components are available at the right time (bigger clients will be preferred)
c) reserve assembly resources when there is possible slowdown from bigger clients. Eg when the peak of Iphone 5S assembly is over.
2) reassure investors and partners. Jolla needs to be able to show that there is demand. They are planninh for a new round of cash injection from debt market. Also potential partners needs convincing to put resources on Jolla relationship.
Show your interest – that is the only way to get the device. With the 0e option you lose nothing. In fact, if there is considerable interest your market, you could be served earlier.
Reply to jipee:
If I pre-order even with the 0€ option, that still means I’ll be *obliged* to buy the device when it comes out, right? An obligation, as opposed to an *option* to get my hands on one of the first shipments. So I’m binding my cash to this purchase, just not now, but promising to give it to Jolla later
Nope, even if you have paid for a pre-order you get full refund if you want to cancel your order. So the $0 option is commitment free and just to show some support!
I think the point jiippee is trying to make is that if there is strong interest all round with many people signing up then Jolla will have no problem going into production.
There needs to be interest and that is why they have set up the pre-order in such a way.
So as yoyo says if you are half decided, you can still go with the 0 Euro option – it costs nothing initially and is commitment free should you decide that it is not what you expected when it comes to payment.
well if that is so, maybe it should be made clearer, stated explicitly. Because in my (not native-english) vocabulary, pre-order means to order before it’s actually available, but still an order, which would a binding transaction. I have no problem at all showing my support by registering this pre-order if I can still back out in case the Jolla turns outr not what I want.
Maybe there are other people like me not aware of this.
@ Ben Opp: That was exactly my thinking and hence frustration when I wrote this: http://jollatides.com/2013/05/22/pre-order-constructive-critique/
I’ve since realised that I think this is more of an investment scheme in Jolla as a company to get the overall demand as you will see their website for the pre-order is ‘powered by Invesdor’: https://www.invesdor.com/
But it’s easy to see how a lot of people (including myself) could be confused so I’ve contacted Jolla and they said they are changing the information to reflect this next week and I will update with a new post once they have explained.
The refund policy seems to clearly state that you have 14 days from pre-order to cancel, otherwise I’m committed. But 6 months or more is too long to be committed to a phone not yet even fully specified – my N900 is on the hairy edge of failing, thus I may need something sooner – so I haven’t pre-ordered.
being able to cancel the order is one thing, getting a refund AFTER you’ve paid is another.
Is there any defintive confirmation yet that pre-ordering with the 0€-option will not compell me to buy?
Here are the FAQ including refund policy:
https://jolla.com/care/
I want to preorder the 100€ version but it is not supported in Austria. I would also like to know how mail for exchange is implemented in sailfish. I need multiple exchange accounts which ALL sync mail, contacts and calender (not possible in meego)
I went with the €100, but I’m not entirely satisfied with this prototype, I’m just totally trusting Jolla, that from what I’ve seen so far, they do listen to the community.
What I think needs to be addressed right away is black borders around the screen. They are too big making the screen look smaller than it is (it just doesn’t look good, plus makes the phone unnecessarily big, and it should be as small as possible. Small is beautifull) These should be minimized to just a couple of milimeters at most.
The other thing is the other-half, I want a slide-out landscape qwerty keyboard, but I do not want my phone to become fatter when I stack one in. Also If the different features are spread across several other-halfs, does that mean that we have to carry around a box of other-halves along with the phone?? I don’t think that will happen, and people would just be left unhappy about it.
Please, please Jolla, revise these two pitfalls of the prototype, and don’t forget to release the rest of the sailfish code when the phones start going out to the world, so that the community can participate in the development.
Finally applied to the 100 euros one. It will be my christmas gift and that’s all.
Hope it won’t be to big… or it will be a very small tablet.
I applied for the free pre-order only at the moment because I’m afraid of the device size. I really don’t care about RAM or CPU as I trust the Sailfish OS to run smoothly even on small configuration but if the device is more than 68 mm width or more than 130 mm heighth, it could really become a showstopper for me unfortunately (too bad I’m not a finn giant )
About the apps, I hope the release version comes with marble + okular + calligra mobile versions ported from plasma active, to allow openstreetmaps navigation, ebook reading and office documents viewing/editing/creating
Hi, i want to know the technical especifications of the phone. Thanks
I have to confess something myself; 3 days a go I have bought an iPhone 4s. I really needed 2 apps which where only available for IOS. I am really liking my N9 more and more as the entire UI of IOS doesn’t make sense compared to the UI of Harmatten. Everything is backwards. But I still bought it only for the use of mere 2 apps!
Mine point is please inform us about the app situation. How easy will the installation and use of Android apps be? And how good will the integration be with the hardware? This is especially important to win over some Android users.
Of course I have already pre-ordered. I choose the € 40,- option because the € 100,- option was not available.
Placed order but it was pointless because I live in USA.
It’s not pointless because if there is enough demand for your country of course arrangements will be made.
Hope you are correct
Don’t just leave it to hope…. Rally up your fellow countrymen and spread awareness about Jolla and the pre-order to give yourself the best possible chance of getting USA on the map. 😉
Really liking the look of sailfish. The other-half shown so far feels a bit gimmicky, though potential for actual functionality on the other half makes me reserve judgement. Would really love to Pre-Order at the €100 level, but it’s not supported in my country (USA) and there’s been very, very little talk (basically none aside from, “and other countries after”) about when a Jolla device might be readily available to me here.
Keeps my money out of the equation and this comment is here because there is no poll option for “My country isn’t being well promoted/supported by Jolla”
In which case just go with either the 40 or 0 Euro option – you have nothing to lose by registering with the 0 Euro option and with luck your country will prove that there is enough demand for Jolla to ship there.
I didn’t preorder yet because I’m hoping the limited edition+other half package will become available in the Netherlands.
If your country isn’t listed currently, but you would like to have a chance at getting the Jolla, please please just register with the 40 or 0 Euro option because that is the only way that you will stand a chance to get your country on the map.
i had pre-order at €100 cause i trust Jolla and i hoping for something more efficient the N9;
and Sailfish is better than Meego
I didn’t pre-order, because I need more information about Jolla and their vision on privacy and I want to be sure there will be a hardware qwerty keyboard other half.
I’ve read their privacy policy, but it’s almost the same as every other company (and most of these companies don’t give a crap about their customer’s privacy). I’m assuming Jolla is unlike other companies, but I have to be sure before i pre-order their phone.
Besides, it isn’t available in the Netherlands.
Add the hardware QWERTY keyboard and I’ll pre-order in an instant. If not, Blackberry Q10 for me.
I pre-ordered to support Jolla, but I’m not sure I will buy the phone when it’s released, because of its size. 4.5 inches is just so bulky… This is quite disappointing, because Sailfish OS looks awesome!
I didn’t pre-order as I hoped for a QWERTZ or QWERTY Slider. Also the Device is IMO just to huge. Give it a QWERTZ Slider and make it into a small 3.8″ smartphone and I would instantly pre-order it.
Sailfish OS is the single most beautiful, cool, slick and innovative mobile OS to date in my view, and Jolla’s greatest asset. However:
The hardware qwertz or no hardware qwertz keyboard (!from Jolla, not 3rd party) – issue is a potential deal breaker for me, so unless I get definitive confirmation about this I’m not gonna pre-order.
If hw qwerty = yes, then I’m 90% likely to pre-order, although there’s still a dozen question unanswered. To list only a few:
– Even if there is a hw qwerty keyboard, I still need the on-screen text input to be top-notch
Have you seen any video yet where this is examined more closely?
– Sailfish needs a kick-ass browser, on par in versatility and power with MicroB in Maemo – only running on stronger hardware, and equipped with the latest technologies. Anything less will be a huge bummer.
– The degree to which Facebook is integrated into the UI and usage-flow of the OS is just killer awesome. Sadly, “social networks integration” these days means it can do Facebook, and if it’s extra fancy, there’s also Twitter. Hoping for a future where the term “social network” does not equal “facebook” anymore, I wish for Sailfish OS to allow other, opern source social networks weaving into its fabric in exactly the same way!
– The device must remain a proper Linux computer as the N900 is. *Doing* stuff with it is the key!
I did the 0 Euro “pre-order” . I need more information about LTE and HSDPA bands support before I commit. I am in USA, and we need 850/1700/1900 bands for HSDPA and 700/1700 for LTE. Plus I travel to Europe and Asia, so I need 2100Mhz band for HSDPA as well.
So, basically I will commit if it has pentaband 3G like N9, plus 700/1700 LTE for USA.
Additions:
I would also like to have HD-Voice codec (AMR-WB) , as t-mobile has rolled it out in USA now. Dual band wifi is on the wish list as well (should be on all wifi devices sold in 2013!)
I am basing these expectations off the the handsets already available, for eg Xperia TL in USA supports all these specs which I desire, and costs $380 only!
I am not too worried about about CPU, as a dual core cortex A9 at 1Ghz+ with 1GB RAM is sufficient to the run the OS (going tby the experience with N9 with single core cortex A8!) .
AMOLED would be good to have, but having a nice IPS LCD wont be a deal breaker .
with the prie tag of 400 euro i expect it to be smartphone and not simple phone, so:
will it have gorilla glass?
will it have such touch screen like lumia 820? (posibility of working with gloves on your hands and no problem with dirty screen)
how good will be stereo sound output compared to n900? (i use n900 + hd600 and it kicks ass, but n9 + hd600 is not so good)
will it play flac files? (i take it for granted because it’s linux based but i don’t know it right now)
will it have boundled off-line navigation?
will it have decent camera optics? (putting somethin like n9 is ok, like n8 would be brilliant){decent camera is not i take for granted, just a few months ago i took lumia 820 from work and when i first saw pictures from lumia 820 i thought something was broken, but it turned out it really is so bad in it}
will it have boundled wifi hotspot?
will it have decent web browser? (html5 and css3)
will it have glonas or at least properly working standard gps receiver – the one in n9 is poor, will it be better?
will it have proper (real) call recorder?
will it have home screen more like n900 or more like n9? (i preffer the one from n900)
will it have boundled skype like n900 and n9?
will it play 720p or 1024p video?
what about the screen resolution and pixel density?
will it have some kind of console? (the one in n9 is enought)
will it have nfc?
will it support dlna?
these abowe are my main concerns, it’s not like it has to have all of them but if it won’t have many of them than i don’t need it, because i already own n900 and n9 so there will be no need for me to replace n9 after only a year of ussage. also someone somewhere was saying that there will be a upgrade possibility for n9 to use sailfish os, that pushes my exectations bar even higher as for the hardware.
all in all, i hope with my whole heart that jolla will create its device just like nokia did with n900 – it was a revelation for me.
I have to admit, I only tried to read a few comments but TLTR at the moment on my lunch break at work.
I just hope that people arent assuming and complaining that it wont come to the USA, thats the whole reason behind the pre order. They dont want to lose money and they DO want to come to the US im sure… but means that enough people have to care… so people, there is a FREE option just to show support, DO IT!
Pre-ordered the phone yesterday, really impressed with everything but the huge bezel was almost a deal breaker for me! Just saying!
Really need a HWKB and because of that can’t decide what to do. And does anyone know if I commit to the 0€ option, can I later change that to the other option without creating another account/order?
I would like to pre-order the limited edition and the other half, but it is not available for Canada.
So in which case go with either the 0 or 40 Euro option. 😉
Answered “No – was expecting a different hardware”.
Having no HWKB was to be expected, but what really is deterrent for me is the size of the device (aka “too big”).
If it’s any consolation, it really didn’t feel that big in the hand (after the N9) and for using a VK, it’s better to be a little bigger than N9 because otherwise the VK gets very cramped which I found was the case with the N9 in portrait mode.
Regarding the HWKB we’ll just have to wait to see what happens and follow updates from Jolla in the coming months.
The problem is not the size in hand (although I find quite stupid all those “phones” that are on the verge of being tablets), but rather in the pocket.
As I’ve said elsewhere, the N9 is the biggest I’d go for.
I am a man of my word. Shut up and Pay up. Contacted a friend in UK – I have PRE_ORDERED 100 Euro – for deliver to UK – it will sent to me AirMail to Australia (minus the battery – I’ll buy one here) Stop flaundering in the ocean Pilrgams – put up the mainsail – get sailing.
That’s the way – good to have a friend in pommy land! 🙂
I tried to pre-order the 100€ version but for me ordering didn’t…
Hope the support answers me soon.
Where are you ordering from ?
Germany so it should work.
It looks like it worked now 🙂 I hope so.
I placed my 100€ pre-order from Switzerland with a ‘trusted’ delivery address in Germany.
Now I feel like a young hungry bird, waiting and begging for food… THX to jollatides.com for ‘feeding’ me!
No problem and this seems a good option for people outside the shipping zone for now – nice to have international friends! 🙂
Do i understand correctly that i can use android apps? This means still needing a google account’ Thanks not for mee, i will wait for tizen’
lol tizen has compatibility to android too. Stupid troll
Yes, you can use Android apps butt not from the Android Market. So, you don’t need a Google account. There will be a different market for it.
It will have the Alien Dalvik layer from Myriad Group
I need to know if it has screen quality equal or rather better than N9 and how much faster it is. Only gripes with N9 are sluggishness sometimes, but I love the screen quality. Also, none of the reviews say how well it works as a PHONE.
I have pre ordered the jolla with €40 option as €100 was not available for Australia. But I would still like to have a slider qwerty hardware just like E7 where screen goes up on the 60º angle. I alwys wanted that in N9, hopefully jolla will do that
Very mixed feelings; I really want to support the company who are serious about trying to develop my dream mobile device, the only one in the foreseeable future I might not consider a downgrade from my current N900.
The big holdback is, that there is very little information about the upcoming device – will that one be The Upgrade (root access to a real (unlike Android) Linux system and QWERTY keyboard being rather mandatory, Qi charging and NFC pretty high on the list, IR transmitter I’d take from the N900 too), will there be later updates for the necessary features, or will there be another device some time later, so that I’d have to pay the rest 300€ for a device I don’t want after all, and another 400 for the proper one?
I decided, that Jolla is anyway my best bet, I want the company to live to deliver products unlike the boring cloned appliances on the market, and that they for sure know that QWERTY is VERY high on the list of features requested by their fans, and I’m sure are working hard to make it real.
Thus, Jolla got my 100€, would never have believed I’d pay that for such a bagful of rumors, hoping they will live up to my high expectations.
The reason that I’m not pre-ordering at this moment is because the Jolla site says:
”Q.2 I would like to know which countries are supported for pre-orders. Please help.
Ans. Countries supported for the Limited ed. Jolla + Other Half (100€) pre-order package at the time of opening May 20, 2013 include Finland, Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy. We’re opening further European countries very soon, stay tuned!”
I want the Other Half (100€) package and live in the Netherlands. So I think I have to wait until they add the Netherlands to the list. I’m not 100% sure but that’s what I understand. Can someone make that clear (for me)?
I need to know more about the “other halfs”, in detail more information about a possible hardware extension connector to provide additional hardware features. If so, I’d love a QUERTZ-, photo-zoom- or eInk-half.
I pre ordered the 100€, I just assumes it has GPS with offline navi, pretty good camera components and better sound output than most of the other phones…
I know it will be a much larger phone than I want to have, but I think it will be a fantastic one.
(I use a N8 today but still think my old broken Nokia X6 had the optimal size..)
I’ve been close to buy N9, 808 PureView or Lumia 920, but it wasn’t the right time. I had decided not to buy the Jolla because I needed another phone quickly but things changed and hopefully it was a choice I won’t regret.
The previews of Sailfish I’ve seen is really great.
I’m really excited of support the people who was working with MeeGo and the N9!
More info on other half required before I know it’s what I’m looking for. I need good landscape qwerty and tiltable screen aka e7.
to me the perhaps most crucial thing is, who’s got root: device owner, jolla and/or operator? if in the end device owner > jolla > operator, then good. and when i say root i mean root as in n900, not n9 #fuckaegis
I voted I need to know more specs.
The most important to me, as a long time Nokia phones owner (me and all my family), I would like to have alarm ring when the phone is turned off.
I set alarm to 6am, switch off the phone before going to bed and get awaked the following morning.
Android, ios, and windows phone OSes don’t have that feature, even the Nokia windows phone ones. I’ve been told it’s an hardware feature that’s not included in the phones that run those three OSes.
Please.
(note: I’m so close to commit to the 100€ preorder 🙂 )
I know what you mean – I love that feature myself as I hate having the phone switched on overnight when I sleep even if you can turn it to flight mode.
I’ll do some digging and see if I can find out more…
I also miss that feature – it really rocks!! I really hope You get that enabled.
Hi,
any update about that feature?
thank you
https://join.jolla.com/en Sold out! ))
Woohoo – good going guys and of course Jolla! 🙂
had ordered.
and why Russia is not among those 8 countries? underestimated the market
naah, it’s not actually “sold” out. They just decided to cancel they 40€ option in favor of the 100€ one because demand is higher for that.
The N900 was never supported in the US, but it wasn’t hard to buy one from Expansys or Dell. Previously I bought a Nokia 7710 through Expansys. In both cases I just swapped in my GSM SIM card from my US phone and it worked fine. What’s the problem with accepting pre-orders from the US?
Is there any defintive confirmation yet that pre-ordering with the 0€-option will not compell me to buy?
Was going to hold off until evidence of a QWERTY add-on appeared, but then I attended the Tizen Dev Conference. Playing with Tizen 2.1 on the device distributed there made me reconsider: not sure how they managed it, but the user experience is markedly inferior to Harmattan on the N9 and, from what I’ve seen, Sailfish. So figured I’d better cast my vote, as it were.
Unfortunately I’m in the US so can’t order the 100 euro option. Tried for the 40 euro which glitched (in retrospect, probably because I had to shoehorn a US address into a euro address form, confusing Visa’s address check — though all it showed me was a blank browser page). To add insult to injury, while I was waiting for a reply from Jolla Care to see if the order went through (it hadn’t) the 40 euro option sold out. So no t-shirt for me to advertise Jolla in Silicon Valley. Oh well. Have at least added my name to the zero euro option.
I need more than 16gb mass memory….32 should be enough and a 10mp camera if possible.
Thank you Dillon!!!!!
I hesitated a lot between “Yes” or “Waiting more info”, because I really care for a keyboard.
I finally opted in :
– the most important is really the outcoming of a free software phone
– there seems to really have been a lot of good work on the OS and phone quality
– now, I cross the fingers to see a keyboard available….
Happy sailin’ Jolla and community folks !
I would have loved to pre-order one but the pre-order was closed.
